Andy Sawford

Andy’s racing biography

“Coming from a family that has always been involved with motorbikes and having a cousin who was twice British GP 250 Champion, it was inevitable that I would become interested at a young age.

I started riding at just three years old, and started competing in Junior Motocross when I was eight.

Despite really enjoying riding in Motocross I was keen to move into Road Racing as soon as I could. Winning the pupil of the day award at a Kawasaki race school at Brands Hatch convinced me to leave Motocross behind and I started my Road Racing Career in 1995.

My first season was racing a production 125cc bike in the British Superteen Championship. I moved up to the British Championship in 1997 and finished 4th overall winning a number of national races along the way.

In 1998 I moved up to the GP125 category and spent two years in this class, picking up the East Midlands Racing Association Club Championship along the way. I was also a regular point scorer in the ultra competitive British Championship.

In 2000 I made my debut in the GP250 class. It was widely regarded as the ultimate category to compete in. I quickly started to score points in the British Championship and was a regular front runner in National Races.

In 2002 I started to race internationally and achieved two top ten results in the Spanish Championship, which has been the breeding ground for recent Moto GP Champions. Encouraged by my success I competed in the European Championship from 2003 onwards and between then and now I have been a regular point scorer in Europe.

My proudest achievements have been winning the Superclub Championship twice, becoming ACU National Champion in 2010 and European Cup winner in 2011.

I was forced through injury to take a year out in 2012, returning to the track in 2013 and having success straight away taking victory in the National 250cc Championship race at Castle Combe.

I managed a number of race wins in the new Two Stroke Grand Prix Championship to win the pre 1990 GP250 and GP open class titles. I also had some races in the CRMC Post Classic 125 series where I was un-beaten in seven outings, taking the coveted race of the year trophy.

For 2014 I competed in the inaugural Pre 1992 GP250 ACU National Championship where I won the Championship with rounds remaining, taking seven wins and three second place finishes from ten starts. I also continued to ride the Post Classic 125 at selected events with further success throughout the season.”
